Unless you experience the complexities of being ill or having an ill family member, it’s difficult to fully comprehend the strain and disruption it causes in ones life. This strain and disruption not only affects the person undergoing medical treatment but also extends to family members and can be particularly difficult for children and siblings of someone who is unwell or who has passed away. As others can have the tendency to focus on the person who is unwell, the children and siblings can be left unattended. It is a very scary, stressful and confusing time for all those involved, and most especially children who can have a very hard time grasping the situation.
The Karl Vella Foundation was set up to support children during these trying times.
What is the Foundation About
The Karl Vella Foundation was set up in May 2014 to provide educational and psychological support to children and adolescents experiencing the serious illness or death of a close family member by creating a haven away from home where they could maintain a sense of ‘normality’ in their lives. When I heard that such an organisation existed I knew it was going to be all sorts of good for so many families.
How You Can Help
The foundation provides all its support and services free of charge for those in need and now they need our help. Karl Vella Foundation (KVF) is organising a fund-raising music concert to be able to continue providing educational and psychological assistance to children in families disrupted by serious illness of a family member.
I can see the benefits of this in my personal life on different levels. Having been diagnosed with cancer myself, there were many times I could have seen myself make use of such services for son. Apart from that, I can also imagine how helpful they would be if I had other children who needed my care while Henry required my constant care. Juggling a family is hard enough as it is. Juggling a family with a sick child when you also have other children to care for is heart wrenching and an organisation such as can be just what the doctor ordered.
