A few weeks ago I received an email from iRead Book Tours asking me to write a book review for one of their up coming book tours. To be completely honest, I hesitated at first, for the simple reason of not wanting to commit to something I thought I would not be able to fulfil. My usual work with a toddler at my ankles already takes up all of my time, I never dreamed I’d be able to throw a book into the mix. I am glad I did. I now need to try to keep the ‘time formula’ I used so that I can get through some more books waiting to be read.
For starters, I would like to point out that I am not usually a fan of reading non-fiction, but the description had me at ‘design’ and ‘challenges’ and I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book. I connected to the stories on so many different levels, that I found myself nodding with agreement and humph-ing in compliance on many occasions.
With the recent and ongoing challenges in my own life I was challenged to face the trials of my own life and reflect upon where I have been and where I want to be; truly inspirational for me. I could relate to stories through creative interests, difficulties and parenthood; the stories speak to creatives, entrepreneurs, mothers and fathers alike. I easily associated with those mothers who were pushing forward to succeed as well as through the eyes of a child where the love and support of parents is instrumental to the success of a child.
I was touched by the way many social issues were addressed by those interviewed. Many of which gave importance to giving back to the community and those in need.
I was familiar with many of the places that were mentioned in the book and I reminisced about growing up.
Marilyn manages to capture the journey of each individual in a concise yet descriptive manner and I was intrigued to read each interview.
About the Author
Marilyn R. Wilson is a freelance writer and editor with a passion for interviewing. It all began in 2006 when the she answered a Craigslist ad from a NY magazine asking for story submissions. Two were accepted. The first live interview was life changing and Wilson has never looked back. With over 150 interviews now behind her, the love of interviewing is still as strong as ever. Whether through a random encounter on the New York subway or via a “one-on-one” interview with an internationally recognized artist, the goal is the same—to share the unique journeys of inspiring individuals.
In 2007, this goal led the author to co-launch a successful, innovative magazine focused on professionals working in the fashion industry, paired with photography and illustrations by local artists. Now on staff at Raine Magazine (NY/Miami/LA), as well as freelancing for other publications, Wilson has taken her passion to a new audience with the release of her first book.
