The Meaning of My Blog’s Name – It Will Make You Smile

Henry and & - A Bird with a French Fry

One of the most common questions I get asked, is about the name of my blog: where did it come from and what does it mean.

I think the most common assumption is that the title refers to me as the Bird and Henry as my French Fry. Yes, I can understand why many of my readers would think this, and I can actually relate to that today, but the truth is that the blog name came before Henry was born, so there is a little more to it.

What’s In a Name

If you’ve ever worked on something of your own, you’ll know just how difficult it can be to come up with something as seemingly simple as a name. It’s actually not that simple at all.

From the very start, I knew I wanted my blog to be a happy place for parents and kids, a positive space to share things that inspire me and to make others smile; that has always been the basic foundation of what I wanted for my blog. But I needed a name.

I sat at the desk in the room that has since been converted to Henry’s room. I had a little board over my desk where I pinned notes, reminders and message, and as I looked up at my bulletin board I noticed a poster I had pinned up a few days before.

Little did I know at the time, how much those words would mean to me all these year later. As I repeated the words day after day it became somewhat of a mantra and it made me think about just how simple happiness can be.

Happiness

This little phrase came to mean a lot to me and I soon realised that I often complicated happiness by thinking something is missing, by waiting for something or by feeling I needed more.

Happiness is subjective, but in essence, it is more simple than we make it out to be. Happiness can be the smallest of things – a thought, a feeling, one tiny moment in time, and if you’re that little bird it would be a french fry.

As the days went on I found myself repeating the words to myself when I felt overwhelmed or sad – ‘today I will be as happy as a bird with a french fry’ – and I knew then that the name of my blog had been starting right at me the whole time.

Fast forward to now and I still find comfort in the same words. They are words that help me look to the simple things for happiness, and that it really doesn’t take much at all to be happy. So, the next time you see a little bird with a french fry, I know you will see it smile and I know it will make you smile too.
